Estrella Springs: A New Chapter in Veterans’ Housing in Santa Ana

The transformation of the former Budget Inn Motel into Estrella Springs marks a significant milestone in Santa Ana’s commitment to supporting veterans and addressing homelessness. This innovative permanent supportive housing development, completed in November 2024, provides 89 studio apartments and two manager units, creating a vibrant community designed specifically for veterans and individuals with mental health diagnoses.

Strategic Location and Design

Situated on 1.8 acres in Santa Ana’s Harbor Mixed Use Transit Corridor, Estrella Springs offers residents convenient access to essential services, retail establishments, and public transportation. The development’s thoughtful density of 50.5 dwelling units per acre maximizes the available space while maintaining a comfortable living environment for all residents.

Comprehensive Support Services

What sets Estrella Springs apart is its commitment to providing more than just housing. This development provides Project-Based Voucher (PBV) units supported by several key programs, including Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH), the Veterans Housing and Homelessness Program (VHHP), and the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA). VASH provides rental assistance and case management to help homeless veterans secure stable housing while accessing vital healthcare and support services. The VHHP focuses on creating affordable housing options specifically for veterans, ensuring long-term stability and preventing homelessness. Meanwhile, the MHSA enhances mental health services, promoting recovery-oriented practices and community-based support. Together, these programs ensure that residents receive the support they need to thrive in their new homes.

Community-Focused Amenities

The development boasts an array of amenities designed to foster community engagement and promote well-being. Residents can enjoy:

  • A welcoming community building
  • An outdoor fitness area with specialized equipment
  • A dedicated basketball court
  • A community garden for sustainable living
  • A dog run for pet owners
  • Beautiful murals that enhance the visual environment

Collaborative Success

This project represents another successful collaboration between Architectural Design Collaborative (ADC) and Jamboree Housing Corporation, with crucial contributions from United Civil and Lifescapes International Inc. Located just one mile from Hero’s Landing, which was ADC and Jamboree Housing Corporation’s first joint project, Estrella Springs continues the momentum in providing quality housing solutions for our veterans.

Impact on the Community

Estrella Springs does more than provide housing – it creates a foundation for stability and growth. The old motel transformation creates new supportive housing in Santa Ana. Estrella Springs offers high-quality homes for those in need. The project brings new life to the neighborhood. Smart design and support services help residents thrive. This development shows the power of community-focused planning. Together, we’re building better homes for veterans and vulnerable residents.
