“The best solutions come from understanding what matters most, then finding the balance between design, existing conditions, budget, and the many disciplines that make a project work.”
Finding the Solution Between the Lines
Melia Fong approaches architecture with equal interest in design and problem-solving. As a Junior Job Captain at ADC, she works across multiple phases of projects, from early planning and design through construction documents, permitting, consultant coordination, QA/QC, and construction administration. She has also taken an active role in managing prototype standards for Club Studio projects, coordinating architecture, interiors, client requirements, finishes, millwork, and details across multiple locations.
Melia is particularly drawn to the points where different disciplines intersect. She enjoys working through the give-and-take between design intent, structure, engineering, existing conditions, budget, constructability, and client priorities. For her, understanding why something matters to the client is often just as important as understanding what they are asking for. That perspective helps her identify the root of a problem and find solutions that move the entire team forward.
One of Melia’s most meaningful ADC projects has been the Military and Veterans Center at Azusa Pacific University. She was involved from early on-site sketches and conceptual charrettes through design development, construction documents, and construction administration. Following the project from its earliest ideas through groundbreaking, construction, punch walk, and ribbon cutting gave her the opportunity to see how design decisions translate into a completed place—and how architecture can have a direct impact on the community it serves.
Outside the office, Melia brings the same hands-on curiosity to just about everything. She enjoys sewing, crocheting, pottery, painting, lei making, baking, running, hiking, traveling, and finding great food wherever she goes. She also enjoys mentoring younger designers and students, including returning to Cal Poly career fairs and helping newer ADC team members navigate the early stages of their careers.
