“The best solutions are often the simplest ones—if they work for the people using the space and can actually be built.”
Making the Details Work
Vanessa approaches design with a practical question in mind: how is this actually going to work? As a Designer at ADC, she spends much of her time developing construction documents, working in Revit and CAD, and resolving the details that turn a design idea into something that can be built.
She is especially drawn to space planning and the relationship between design and function. Vanessa enjoys understanding how people will use a space, working through how its pieces come together, selecting finishes, and finding straightforward solutions to complicated problems. She pays attention to both the larger design idea and the small transitions that can ultimately determine whether a space feels resolved.
Collaboration is an important part of that process. Vanessa appreciates the different perspectives that clients, consultants, contractors, and other designers bring to a project, and she believes the strongest results come when everyone is communicating clearly and working toward the same goal.
What continues to draw her to architecture is the combination of creativity and problem-solving—and the fact that there is always something new to learn. She enjoys seeing decisions made during design carry through construction and ultimately become a finished space.
Outside the office, Vanessa has recently taken up surfing and is enjoying the challenge of learning something completely new, one session at a time.
