Alexan Kendry is a 211-unit multifamily community in Montclair designed by ADC for Trammell Crow Residential. The development combines three- and four-story tuck-under apartment buildings on an approximately six-acre site, achieving a density of 34 units per acre while incorporating an 8,500-square-foot amenity building and a comprehensive outdoor amenity program.

The architecture draws from Montclair’s agricultural history and the citrus orchards that once covered the area. ADC translated that history into a contemporary modern agrarian character using simple building forms, varied rooflines, warm materials, metal accents, and a carefully composed palette of colors and textures. Rather than directly reproducing traditional farmhouse architecture, the design uses those familiar forms as the basis for a distinctly contemporary residential community.

Site planning was equally important to the project. Buildings define a series of landscaped courtyards and pedestrian connections across the irregular site, creating a more engaging walking experience between residences and amenities. Community features include a resort-style pool, fitness center, outdoor grilling areas, fire pits, a dog park, and raised garden planters for residents.

Alexan Kendry received two 2021 PCBC Gold Nugget Grand Awards, including Multi-Family Community of the Year — Up to 4 Stories. The Gold Nugget jury specifically highlighted the project’s façade, use of color, and site planning approach to the pedestrian experience.
